New Jersey Nurses Union stands in full solidarity with our sisters and brothers of NYSNA who are on strike at three New York hospitals. More than 15,000 nurses have been forced to take this action after months of stalled bargaining. Their demands are clear, reasonable, and rooted in patient safety: safe staffing, protection from workplace violence, and fair pay and benefits for frontline health care workers. These are not radical demands — they are the foundation of safe, quality care. Hospitals cannot continue to put profits ahead of patients. If hospital systems can afford to pay executives millions in salaries, bonuses, and perks, and they can afford to bring in traveling nurses to fill the positions of striking nurses, then they can afford to hire and retain enough nurses to ensure safe patient care and humane working conditions. Chronic understaffing and unsafe workplaces put nurses at risk and jeopardize the health of entire communities. What happens in New York impacts nurses everywhere, and we will not stand by while health care workers are pushed to the breaking point. We support NYSNA nurses on the picket line and urge hospital management to return to the table and reach a fair agreement that prioritizes patients, workers, and public health.
